Great news on stem cells

Or so it looks - they found a way to make skin cells mimic stem cells:

I know I've seen this kind of "breakthrough" before, with other kinds of cells, as well.

Very cool. Here's hoping the rr won't find a way to label skin as under the "sanctity of life" clause...

And they did it all without government stem cell funding that Bush vetoed!
Imagine that, research actually being done and paid for without using government to force people to pay with taxes.

Lol they will.... holyrollers always seem to find a way to fuck everything up.

i still think drug companies and pharmacuticals are against curing things like AIDS and other ailments b/c they make more money keeping you on that drug than curing you and not needing that drug anymore...

Can't be.... the most promising line is embryonic... no way did they find yet another way to use the adult cells. You must be mistaken.

/sarcasm off

There is no reason for this kind of "told you so" BS, as though everyone just knew that there would be substitutes for embryonic. Even in this article, they say there are a lot of risks w/ skin cells & that its still years away from really matching embryonic. If I'm sitting in a wheelchair right now, I'm not that comforted.

It's just good news; to act like "oh, we all KNEW that there would be something else to come along" is insane...

And for the record, it's still unbelievably stupid that they can't use stem cell lines NOW that are going to be destroyed anyway, because of people who preach about the "sanctity of life" and still support the slaughter in Iraq....

There is absolutely a reason to do so. How many people on this site alone have decried the fact that the Fed doesn't invest into R&D with embryonic stem cells. Proclaiming that it would set the US behind the rest of the world... yada yada yada..... then when someone pointed out that the vast majority of success has come not from embryonic lines, but adult lines, it was glossed over and we had to go back and listen to all the crap that embryonic was the future... blah blah blah....

That right there is EXACTLY what I am talking about. Researchers most certainly CAN use embryonic lines. They are using embryonic lines. They will continue to use embryonic lines.... they just won't be funded by the Federal Government (at this time).

It is the idiotic belief that the funding and research isn't happening because the Fed isn't doing it that is so unbelievably frustrating to hear chanted over and over again.

Not to mention to continuous idiotic attempts to tie Iraq in with every fucking topic.

And the cutting edge of this research is STILL embryonic, and we ARE seeing some of our best minds migrate to areas where more research is funded on those lines. If you read the article I posted, they're saying that the skin cell mimic is probably still years away, and that embryonic is where we will see the most progress NOW.

As I said, there is no reason we shouldn't be utilizing more of the cell lines that will be destroyed anyway. Any way you slice it, it is a setback, for some inane argument about the sanctity of life.

The cutting edge? Please. Yes, there are numerous theoretical possibilities for the embryonic research. But it is these vain attempts to act like it is the best that is annoying. Because to date adult stem cell research has provided far more results.

That said, you are correct in that many top scientists are migrating towards looking at the embryonic lines possibilities. But how is that possible if as you say they aren't being allowed to use that line and they aren't funded?

How can anyone argue that you're not losing time when you withdraw funding from research like this?

If research has X # of dollars and it COULD have much more if there weren't insane religious wacko's dictating policy, how can you argue that it is "just as far along" with fewer resources?

Idiots...

"Because to date adult stem cell research has provided far more results. "

That's like saying at the start of the internet age "we're getting more results with fax machines, so why should we invest in this new thing?"

So shortsighted. It's not even worth debating.

Nailed it, beautiful post.
Lefties like Lorax keep lying and pretending that religious beliefs are stopping them doing something when really they are just stopping government from funding them.

I would have told Michael J Fox that if he wants stem cell research funded, his millionaire Canadian ass can fund it and stop trying to get regular American taxpayers to be forced into paying for it.

You really have no comprehension of the ROI for medical research. It's astronomical; I've posted it for you a few times, but you always ignore it.

And you're ridiculous, anyway - always posting about how "lefties" never post good news. I give it a shot, and your 1st response is a partisan strawman...

I fully agree. Rather than simply destroy the embryo they should be able to use them for research. Give some meaning to the life other than human refuse.

That's right. Its all about intent. We didn't specifically mean to vaporize children in a Bagdad neighborhood, even though we knew women and children are present.

But, specifically targeting a blastocyst in a petri dish is deliberate homicide. Its intentional.

:pke:

You forget the source of that money. If I take money privately, I better produce some results/progress or my funding will be cut.
Government often works the opposite, the worse results you get, the more you try and sell your funding as "needed" and with the right PR/contacts politicians will deliver.

You say we are being "left behind" or bright minds are going elsewhere (presumably Europe) because our government does not fund research as much as Europe does?
Yet compare the results in discoveries in the example of drug discoveries contrasted to research:

In 1998 to 2002, America produced 85 NMEs (new molecular entities) to Europe's 44."
America has half the population of Europe and developed almost double the amount of discoveries in drugs as left-wing Europe did.
