Greatest book of all time

FUCK THE POLICE

911 EVERY DAY
In a vain similar to my greatest song of all time thread, I will start the greatest book of all time thread.

You are each allowed one (1) nomination. After the nominations are rounded up, I'll make an IRV poll to decide the winner. Sorry, I'm abandoning the 10,000 or so round process. :(

Mine: The Grapes of Wrath

well actually there are 2 but since I think Muslims outnumber Christians I will say the Koran.

It has had the largest impact on our past and current world society.

This thread is about the greatest book of all time in quality. That should've been apparent from the title. The impact it has had is irrelevant.

I would've said Don Quixote but I haven't read all of it.

One book? Only one?

No way, I just can't do it.

A Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, War & Peace, anything by HP Lovecraft, To Kill a Mockingbird, Profiles in Courage, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Path of the Peaceful Warrior, The Lord of the Rings Triology, Slaughterhouse Five, The Sun Also Rises, Foundations Edge, The Great Gatsby, Dune, Dracula, jeez......

Nope, can't nominate just one.

Muslims Worldwide
The number of Muslims, like the number of Christians, is growing worldwide. In 2006, there was an estimated 2.2 billion Christians and 1.3 billion Muslims, both figures including many nominal adherents.

The Bible - already known as "The Greatest Book Ever Written" with the New Testament having the referral: "The Greatest Story Ever Told".

The bible is the greatest book ever written only if you believe the story. Otherwise its a disjointed and graphically bloody account of a wandering tribe who thought themselves the "chosen people". It also has some passages that border on pornographic. But as far as great writing, while there are some beautiful passages, most of it leaves a lot to be desired.

I know it's really girlie of me but i have to say Jane Eyre by the other Bronte. I tend to go against the grain...

Yeah so I'll just take the first one from your list and call it done.

The Koran and the Bible are not going on the list. No book that is only even read anymore because of stupid religious reasons is going on the list.

Active by what definition of active?

Doesn't matter though. Christians still outnumber Muslims by quite a bit. They are gaining, but Christianity had a 1000 year head start.

read the link. Active as in show up in the mosque it seemed to me from reading it.

Of any book in all of history, the Christian Bible is the most read, most translated into other languages, and most often quoted - even by those who do not believe in it.

In fact it is rather amazing how often people who are either self proclaimed agnostics or outright atheists who will quote - as some kind of truth or wisdom - those beautiful passages to which you refer.

So that would reduce the 1.3 billion number which included all Muslims, would it not? Of course, not all 2.2 billion Christians go to church as prescribed either.

My point is, and you can look up other sources if you want to verify, is that Christians still significantly outnumber Muslims. You claimed Muslims outnumber Christians.

BTW: have you ever read the Quor'an?

Yes. It was painfully boring.

I'm not going to pretend to actually have authority one what the greatest book is so I will just list what I like/love.

1984
Animal Farm
Lord of the Flies
Catcher in the Rye
Catch 22
