A Greek triple jumper has been expelled from the Olympics after she posted a racist joke on Twitter.

Voula Papachristou was kicked out of her national team for mocking African migrants and expressing support for a far-Right political party.

Her offending message – which was referring to reports of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in her home country – read: ‘With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!’

Seems just a tad harsh considering how many years she must have put into training for the Olympics, a severe bollocking would have been better.
 
She apologized, and the remark is insensitive but racist? Some censure was in order, she can learn from the experience... But kicking her out? Yeah, I agree. It seems a bit harsh.

It may have a lot to do with the political situation in Greece and the rise of extreme parties of both political persuasions. There has been a huge influx of illegal immigrants from Africa in Greece lately.
 
The Olympics isn't about racism, nor is it about politics.

I'm glad the racist bitch was kicked to the curb.

There may have been a time when that was true but certainly not since the 1936 Olympics when Hitler used the whole occasion to attempt to show off the superiority of Aryan athletes and Jesse Owens humiliated him.

Is every black person at the Olympics from Africa? No. Nor are the mosquitos.feasting on just blacks.

She made a comment based upon ignorance and stereotypes, which is the heart of racism.

Africans... from Africa... consisting of a wide variety of skin pigmentation (despite howey's racist view that they are all black)
Mosquitoes... carrying West Nile virus (from Africa)...

Says they will get to eat homemade food... African Mosquito eating African people (again Howey the racist... they have a very wide variety of pigmentation)

In the article I read there were other tweets, which along with this one which when put together made her statement racists.

" Twitter account ((at)papaxristoutj) contained several retweets and links to sites and YouTube videos promoting the views of Golden Dawn, a formerly marginal extreme right party that entered the Greek Parliament in two recent elections – in May and June – by polling almost 7 percent of the vote. She has since erased those links and retweets from her account."

The Greeks are not protesting this, in fact they have banned all the rest of the team from using social media till after the Olympics.
