Google Fiber will soon be able to count C Spire among its competitors. The wireless carrier today announced that it intends to deploy its own 1Gbps fiber-based internet service to cities and towns in the United States. The initiative is called C Spire Fiber to the Home, and the company claims its ultra high-speed internet will be made available to "any community near an existing fiber route that opens its arms to welcome it." And while we know it will be somewhere in Mississippi, C Spire's exact launch city is still to be determined. That's because it's taking cues from Google's Fiber rollout; C Spire has launched a "Get Fiber First" campaign that encourages residents, businesses, and community leaders to present a case for why their towns should get the speedy fiber connections.

A press release says the wireless provider is looking for towns that "have a passion for innovation and the desire to make their communities better." Cities that "want it the most, and move quickest, will get it first," C Spire says. The company says it already has the necessary technology and equipment in place to deploy Fiber to the Home. Its fiber optic infrastructure currently features 4,000 miles of fiber cable, with another 1,500 miles scheduled to be installed within the next year. Of course, this "build on demand" strategy isn't always helpful to low-income residents. As for how much service will cost, C Spire is only saying it will offer 1Gbps internet at "competitive" rates.

Hope you enjoy your shitty pseudo-fiber FiOS!

Oh, come the fuck on, I live right next to a damn fiber line. You can't go anywhere in the US without tripping over unused fiber three times over that the telcos are hording. Just let me dig the hole myself.

Who cares; no matter how fast their internet is, Mississippi will still have the lowest average IQ in the nation!

It doesn't matter if you're in the middle of nowhere, if you have gigabit ethernet, you're basically everywhere. Businesses will want to set up shop in Mississippi just for gigabit internet, as they're doing in Kansas City. It will be a major boon to our so far non-existent IT capability. As for IQ, any differences in IQ among disparate populations are not due to genetics (as racists like you would likely claim), but due to education. Mississippi is currently getting left behind because jackass companies like ATT are abandoning rural residents. Once fiber gets hooked up to the farm, the gap will disappear, Mississippi will be brought closer to the rest of the nation, and then exceed it. Once distance no longer matters, we will surge ahead, and conquer the world.

And why are places in the middle of nowhere getting gigabit internet while entitled jackasses in northeastern states are getting left to Comcast? Because we're not entitled jackasses, we'll actually pay attention when these companies start calling, while you stand around in your ivory tower and think you'll be on top for ever. Guess what - you're not. The United States is a rotting hulk, to be surpassed by China in a generation. The Northeast of the United States is an especially rotting hulk, a pit of decadence and stagnation. The weight of the world has moved elsewhere, you are clinging on to distant dreams.
