During the Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954, Sen. Joe McCarthy, was on the defensive. He had first accused the U.S. State Department and then the U.S. Army of being infiltrated with hundreds of communists. During the hearing, itself, McCarthy ranted that Joseph Welch, the Army's attorney, had a youthful staff member with ties to a "communist" organization. Welch was stunned by McCarthy's brazen counterattack. "Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness," Welch said in the nationally televised hearings. McCarthy attempted to answer but Welch spoke over him. "Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You have said enough. Have you no sense of decency?" Sitting beside McCarthy during that hearing was Roy Cohn, McCarthy's Chief of Staff in witchhunt hearings all across the nation in which innocent women and men were subpoenaed and if they refused to cooperate, were blacklisted from their jobs.....like my dad! Cohn went on a career as a Wall Street lawyer defending any mobster who had the millions to pay.
