Scott used the GOP rebuttal to continue a theme he started earlier in the week about how there is unity in the country's diversity, claiming that Republicans have supported policies that have reformed the criminal justice system and opened the economy to all Americans regardless of race.

"Just before COVID, we had the most inclusive economy in my lifetime," he said.
"The lowest unemployment rate ever recorded for African-Americans, Hispanics and Asians, and a 70 year low nearly for women. Wages were growing faster for the bottom 25% than the top 25%. That happened because Republicans focused on expanding opportunity for all Americans."

Republicans controlled Washington in May 2018 when the African American unemployment rate dipped to 5.9%, for instance.

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott defended the country's record on race as one of opportunity and optimism on Wednesday in response to President Joe Biden's first joint address to Congress.

I have experienced the pain of discrimination," Scott said while looking at the camera. "I know what it feels like to be pulled over for no reason and to be followed around a store while I'm shopping."

Scott said past efforts at police reform have either been blocked or ignored by Democrats, but that he hopes this time will be different. He emphasized how even after his experiences he believes "brave police officers in Black neighborhoods" shouldn't be viewed as enemies.

"We are not adversaries," Scott said. "We are family."

This administration inherited a tide that had already turned," he said. "The coronavirus is on the run!"

But the nation remains "heavy-laden" and anxious about the pandemic due largely to open questions about what life will look like in the coming months, Scott said.

Few issues has divided the country as much as a debate over school closures, which he said hurts the country's most vulnerable students the most.

"Our public schools should have reopened months ago," Scott said. "Other countries's did. Private and religious schools did. Science has shown for months that schools are safe."

Earlier this year the Centers for Disease Control pointed out how multiple studies found little evidence of COVID-19 spreading in schools in the U.S. or other countries.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky backed up those findings in February when she said the scientific data indicates that schools can safely reopen even before teachers are vaccinated.

The Biden administration promised school reopenings but faced pushback from teachers unions. It released a five-step plan this week to safely get children back into the classroom, but Republicans have chastised how it doesn't take steps until the fall.

Scott called out the White House on the issue during his speech saying, "too often, powerful grown-ups set science aside, and kids like me were left behind."

Every country inhabited by more than one race is a racist country.
People are tribal by nature.

The best we can do is legislate against racist behavior.
We can't legislate how people feel.

People are what they are.
We don't get to draw our own blueprints.

The country has long passed the "original sin" of racism,and we've self corrected where racism is rare and certainly not systemic

Dems want the narrative to keep the minorities thinking they cant succeed or they playing field discriminates -

I think the key point people like Scott and Niki Haley make is that there is racism, but America is not a fundamentally racist country as some proclaim.

Tim Scott is a stud. Could easily see that dude as a VP candidate in ‘24. He’s got a great back story and a great way about him.

individual racism or tribalism might be a sociological thing, but it's not institutionalized as Dems claim.

right. there are instances of racism. but the county is not set up that way.
There is already talk of him running in 2024 -and for POTUS
He would be awesome cause he speaks so well against teh Dem narrative
 
I agree with Tim Scott, there are racist elements to America, there are racists in America, we have some level of institutional racism, but America is not a racist country. To say we are a racist country would mean we are defined by being racist.

Over the last 100 years we have made great strides at reducing at eliminating the racist elements of our country, and we continue to do so.

Not just the Civil War, but more importantly the Civil Rights legislation that outlawed discrimination

We are making progress, more needs to be done, but progress is being made, and therefore I would not call us a racist country anymore.

Not just America, the western world continues to make progress.

"Middle class" is a completely meaningless term.

If, as a matter of circumstance, not ideology,
you live off your own business profits and investment income,
you're a capitalist.

If you live on income from employment, no matter how well remunerated,
you're working class.

Middle class means fucking nothing.
Half of our problem is that we love to use vague terms to sabotage meaningful communication.

bullshit! We have had a black president, we have blacks in congress, we have black CEOs. The USA is NOT a racist country. Tim Scott is correct and proof that anyone can succeed here is he/she is willing to work hard.

Now, if you want to see racism, explain why the Ivey league colleges are limiting asian admissions. That, you moron, is racism. BLM is racism, KKK is racism. The US constitution is NOT racist.

more bullshit. Middle class is a reference to income level. If your income is in the middle ranges you are middle class. Thats all is has ever meant.
