Between 2021 and 2024, 442 reporters lost their "hard pass" to cover the White House, and this was a result of new rules implemented by the Biden administration’s press office.

Over a three-month period in 2023, the number of reporters with White House access dropped by 31%, reducing the total from approximately 1,417 to 975.

This reduction followed the expiration of previous passes on July 31, 2023, after new credentialing standards were announced in May of that year and took effect in August.

The Biden White House introduced rules allowing for the revocation of hard passes for journalists who did not "act in a professional manner," according to the administration.
