Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for better rail security now that the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound has turned up plans to attack trains in the U.S.

Schumer said Sunday that he will push for the creation of a "do not ride" list for Amtrak. The list would be similar to the no-fly list that keeps those suspected of terrorism from flying into or out of the United States.

Shortly thereafter, Schumer will present legislation that will enact the 'do not drive list' and the 'do not walk' list. In order to enforce such idiocy, Schumer will hire 1 billion law enforcement officers to police the situation. Thus solving the unemployment problem at the same time. When asked how he would pay for such measures, Schumer replied:

I am a US Senator, we don't have to pay for anything

/sarcasm

I'm from the government, I'm here to help you

check out some of the comments on the article from that link.... people are friggin ignorant to think the proposed measure will help keep them safe.

For rail... take mountain bike out of storage.... ride out beside track until you are in a fairly remote stop between large cities and plant your bomb. High speed rail comes by and.... yeah... you are still dead. That is just ONE way they could do it. Getting anally probed by the TSA isn't going to prevent a terrorist attack.

Soon we'll all have a micro-chip implanted to verify our identity. They would probably get citizen's co-operation if the chip was inserted in the butt. That way one could moon the official asking.

will the person who adamantly refuses to believe in the slippery slope argument, please stand up?

you know that one time fundamental right to travel freely? something tells me we'll be forced to have 'papers' to make sure we're in an approved area.

I think ti'd be cheaper and easier if we just abolished AMTRAK.

Of course it would. But no. We NEED to install high speed rail systems that have to be heavily subsidized to justify their use relative to air travel. Seriously... why the F would we need to have a high speed rail between LA and San Fran when there are a bajillion airlines willing to go that route already with greater safety and less cost?

What is truly amazing is that we are facing budget cuts across the board due to our debt situation and yet when $2 BILLION comes back to the Fed, rather than use that $2B to offset cuts in say aid to low income families (food stamps etc...) they instead re-bid the $2B to force that money into other rail projects that didn't make the cut the first time around.

Why does that amaze you? Government administrators are tasked to spend the money that the legislature authorizes them to spend. If they don't spend it on the designated programs it is seen as a failure, and a possible career killer.

An airplane doesn't get you to down town.

ok.... and????

If you want a shuttle line built from the airport to downtown, then let LA pay for that. San Fran already has one.... as do many other cities. there is NO economic justification for a rail line from San Fran to LA. NONE. It is not economically viable.

OK. We''ll gladly keep federal rail money here in the Northeast Corridor.

I agree that the locales should pay for their own infrastructure but my point is that downtown to downtown high speed rail is much more desirable then shuttle to airport, (transfer) airplane to airport, (transfer) shuttle to downtown. You know that each transfer involves sitting on your ass waiting and in the business world time is money...

Exactly. If I want to get from Boston to Manhattan, not East Boston to Queens, the train is quicker, cheaper and less a pain in the ass.

Take away the government subsidies and federal funds and see how much people like it. From your comments, I assume you would agree that it would not succeed.

Local governments should do the funding, and the feds should only fund the portion that is outside of their jurisdiction, and then only to the point of being on par with competing forms of transportation.
