I used to live along a major creek. One winter(96), we got a massive blizzard for our area...20" of snow overnight. The creek was frozen over before the storm. The next day it warmed up somewhat and we got freezing rain all day long. Then it warmed further still, and the temps were in the low 60's.
The ice on the creek let loose and created an ice jam at a bridge about 3miles downstream. We had massive flooding as the creek was running backwards. Then the ice jam left loose. We saw cabins, septic tanks, and a whole host of large items rolling down the creek.
The most heartbreaking thing I saw was a dog on a chunk of ice that was too scared to move....I chased after it and called it for about 300 yards, but it was moving too fast. I ran back to the house and called my neighbor downstream and told him to look for this poor dog. I then fell on my knees and cried like a baby.
My neighbor called me back about 15 minutes later and said that he coaxed the dog to dry land.
It wasn't long after that, my first wife and I separated. It was a crappy marriage and the freeze/flood was the straw that broke the camel's back.
