Veering toward a midnight Friday government shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson proposed a new plan that would temporarily fund federal operations and disaster aid, but punted President-elect Donald Trump demands for a debt limit increase into the new year.

Mike Johnson: 'We will not have a government shutdown'

Addressing reporters following the House Republicans’ meeting before today’s midnight deadline to avert a government shutdown, House speaker Mike Johnson vowed: “We will not have a government shutdown.”

Johnson said:

We have a unified Republican conference. There’s a unanimous agreement in the room that we need to move forward. I will not telegraph to you the specific details of that yet ... I expect that we will be proceeding forward. We will not have a government shutdown.”

trump, President Musk, and the Republicans in general are showing that they simply do not have what it takes to keep the lights on.
If you can't afford your own nuclear plant to keep the lights on in your house, Trump and Musk are not your allies.

Yep. One of their reasons is to have the shutdown happen on Biden's watch so he gets the blame. But it matters not; he's not the next president. All that will accomplish is to hurt the citizens and the govt. employees who don't get paid. At Christmas.

Republicans must have a good feeling about this bill. Once they’ve voted, they are bolting from the chamber after exchanging “Merry Christmas” handshakes. That’d be difficult to do if they thought the measure was going to fail.
If it doesn’t pass, the House would need to stay in session and come up with yet another plan to keep the government open. Clearly, GOP lawmakers feel they’ve got a winner, and can head home for the holidays.
