This article starts with a bang:
“The grim reality for Britain as it faces up to 2022 is that no other major power on Earth stands quite as close to its own dissolution. In the opening two decades of the 21st century, Britain has effectively lost two wars ...”
Which wars were those, you may ask? The article explains:
“First with the 2008 financial crisis”
The financial crisis started in the US and impacted every major economy in the world. And Britain lost a war?
“Then, in 2016, when the country chose to rip up its long-term foreign policy by leaving the European Union”
Now we’re getting closer to the writer’s concerns, I think. By choosing to secede from the ever-closer EU, Britain lost another war.
“It then spectacularly failed in its response to the coronavirus pandemic … one of the worst death rates in the developed world”
Here are the latest Covid death rates for two countries in the developed world:
UK 2215 per million
US 2536 per million
Also, Britain was the first country in the world to start mass vaccination: December 8, 2020. Bet you didn’t know that.
The article is relatively short by the standards of The Atlantic. Worth skimming; just don’t forget to fact check.
[I couldn’t resist this: “The country overall likes to think of itself as a mini United States.”]
