This evening, I got Grok to analyze and list potential excessive, concerning, or wasteful spending in the latest 1,547-page spending bill that is currently being fast-tracked through Congress (without being read by most Congress-critters).

Institute of Museum and Library Services grant (2024)

Amount: $1,033,752

Recipient: Chicago Historical Society

Purpose: The Chicago History Museum will install a temporary exhibition to explore the history and persistence of the diverse Latino communities in Chicago. The exhibition builds upon a previous IMLS-supported initiative to foster deeper relationships with Chicago’s Latino communities through restorative practices and co-creative processes. The museum will collaborate with staff and students at the Instituto Justice and Leadership academy, and the project will be guided by two community advisory groups. The project will support the purchase of exhibition materials, staffing to design and install the exhibit, and the development of associated public programming. The exhibition will provide a sense of inclusion and representation of Chicago’s Latino communities while contributing to the public knowledge and understanding of how these communities help shape the city.

Institute of Museum and Library Services grant (2022)

Amount: $1,498,442

Recipient: American Association Of Museums

Purpose: The American Alliance of Museums will embed the principles of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEIA) into its fieldwide assessment and accreditation programs and related standards and ethics for museums. Project activities will include the assessment of existing programs and providing clear guidance and training for museum staff and volunteers associated with the programs. A research firm will analyze demographic and social factors of the programming to identify variances in program outcomes. A task force will use the results to recommend changes, which project staff and bodies such as the accreditation commission may incorporate into standards, peer reviewer training, and related assessment programming. The association will share Progress through status reports, blog posts, and conference sessions. A project evaluation will provide a model for other organizations working through a multi-year, system-wide process to embed DEIA fundamentals at a structural level.

Institute of Museum and Library Services grant (2023)

Amount: $1,502,000

Recipient: Efforts Of Grace, Inc

Purpose: The Ashé Cultural Arts Center and its partners in the Alliance for Cultural Equity will address the structural failures that have resulted in disparities of support for locally-based arts and cultural organizations. They will deploy solutions that highlight the transformative power of art and culture, and the institutions that advance them, to affect the economy and the quality of life of the city and state. Building upon an IMLS-funded research project that supported the development of the Alliance for Cultural Equity, the team of 19 institutions will launch an outreach and education campaign calling for a more complete telling of their history, advocate for cultural heritage representation on municipal boards, identify policies that can be changed and work to change them, and create a new way to archive particularly for oral, non-material and non-written traditions. In the long-term, the Alliance for Cultural Equity will identify the distinctive challenges and dismantle the barriers to sustainability for small museum, archive, and cultural organizations in the Louisiana ecosystem, and build a collective body with the capacity to implement approaches that help arts and culture institutions thrive and evolve.
