Derek is Derek Black, and if there were a royal family of white supremacy, he was its fresh-faced crown prince. His father is Don Black, the founder of the virulently racist website Stormfront. His godfather is David Duke, the former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. And Derek’s inoffensive presentation of his white nationalism proved potent.



Saslow chronicles Black’s transformation from a golden boy of white nationalism to one of its most outspoken critics in his new book, “Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist.”

Now in graduate school studying history, Black says it's more urgent than ever that we discuss inequality. "We don't like to deal with it, but our country still lives with a legacy of white supremacy, which results in an incredibly wide wealth and power gap between white people and everyone else," says Black. "That doesn't implicate every white person as a racist, but the last year or two has made it evident that racist ideologies still have a lot of power. I'll use whatever platform I have to acknowledge that."
