DC Council Considering Gay Divorce Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — The D.C. Council is considering legislation that would make it easier for gay and lesbian couples who marry in the nation’s capital to get divorced.

The bill would let gay couples who married in Washington get divorced even if they no longer live in the district, provided they live somewhere that would not recognize their divorce. Under current law, one member of the divorcing couple has to live in Washington for six months before starting divorce proceedings.

Washington began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in March 2010. Six states also allow same-sex marriage. But divorcing couples can face legal hurdles if they live in a state that does not recognize their union.

i would prefer this thread be about only the law. not religious arguments.

I'm not sure what the problem here is, divorce is a right married couples have. Making it easier, well I don't have a problem with that. And before somebody says that "if divorce were harder fewer people would do it should", we should probably be working on the other end where you can get married in under and hour in vegas while drunk, shouldn't divorce be just as easy?

The bar for false outrage is so low these. So very low.

Pretty soon, the supreme court is going to overrule all of this and make laws like this unnecessary anyway.

How isn't it equality under the law? The law simply enables gay couples to get divorced when they otherwise wouldn't be able to.

Makes sense. How are they supposed to divorce otherwise?

But that raises questions about polygamous marriages. Maybe have a special "Twofor"?
