Its all well and good to debate where the decline started.
But until our elected officials (and indeed, we the people) can put aside the madness of party politics and start looking at what is best for the nation and our people, the decline will continue in one way or another.

Our total debt when Reagan took office was about 700 billion.
Not even a fiscal ditch.
And we went from a creditor to a debtor nation, not an insignificant thing.
Don't forget the purposeful plan to swicth from a manufacturing economy to a service economy.
