HR 45, Gun control licensing and registration...

Gun owners would have to register at a central (D.C.) database, release access to medical and mental records, keep a valid address, register all transfers...

Looks almost identical to one Rahm Emanuel brought forward that was defeated last year.

The people in power would do well to leave issues like this alone. If Obama (and other elected democrats) can show that he is unwilling to go to extremes with abortion and can keep the gun-grabbing Democrats and Republicans from going crazy then the democrats will be in power for a long time. There are many (myself included) who agree with the democrats on so many things from providing a safety net for the poor and misfortunate to maintaining and improving our infrastucture (which provides jobs) to a lot of other areas. These people will continue to vote democratic if they do not go to the extreme in certain areas.

I predict another record round of gun purchases.

I could use a .30 cal Kentucky Long rifle with a curly maple stock....maybe this would be a good time? I could use a good varmint gun that can double up for deer hunting.

Or should I go upscale and get a semi-auto grenade launcher, teach my nephew how to hunt ducks with it and then join the NRA (National Republican Association) so I can grumble with red-necks bout the gubment takin my guns away?

Well... we all know how upscale it is to grumble about the gub'mint...

That's certainly a good point. This is like abortion is for the right wing base. The party is throwing the liberal base a bone. It doesn't stand a snow balls chance in hell of being passed. But it will make the radicals feel like their voice has been heard.

If you want a Kentucky Long rifle, go with a bigger caliber muzzle loader.

If you want a varmint rifle that doubles as a deer rifle, go with a .243, 257 Roberts, or a 25-06. (or get a T/C Encore)

If you want to pretend that there are not plenty of politicians who would indeed prefer an unarmed population, dig a small hole in your yard and insert your head.

I agree with all of this, especially the last sentence. A 243 is an excellent all around choice for varmits and whitetails.

Reading the NRA as the National Republican Association is a mis-read though. I think I pointed out that in my last "voters guide" given to me by the NRA the majority (around 80% I think) of the recommended candidates were democrats.

Believe me, if this should pass, you would see one year of massive purchases. The "effective date" takes place one year after passage and people who own arms before that are not required to go through all this.

Even before that, as it is being discussed, more guns will be purchased. It is my opinion that more guns will sell during this administration and while democrats hold the reigns than during any previous administration due to Obama's support of the DC gun ban (to give one example).

i already have to jump thru hoops for licensing in MA and its crazy expensive. You have to pay over $100 and take a class that costs hundreds before you cant get licensed.

Really is an infringement of my rights at this point. Poor farmers cant even afford to legally own a gun now.

Do rifles count? Wow. Those are tough gun laws.

I don't think the law says what you say it says.

Try again.

All I did was provide a link directly to the law, and copy a few of the titles of sections and put them into sentence form.

*I really should start using "Newsboy" when posting this kind of stuff so you people will quit assuming things.

Well, maybe you should read the CRS summary or the bill before you post things like this. You are misleading your readers. And I'm not assuming anything, just pointing out that the law doesn't say what you say it says.

For those that would like to know what the law actually does, here:

Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 - Amends the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to prohibit a person from possessing a firearm unless that person has been issued a firearm license under this Act or a state system certified under this Act and such license has not been invalidated or revoked. Prescribes license application, issuance, and renewal requirements.

Prohibits transferring or receiving a qualifying firearm unless the recipient presents a valid firearms license, the license is verified, and the dealer records a tracking authorization number. Prescribes firearms transfer reporting and record keeping requirements. Directs the Attorney General to establish and maintain a federal record of sale system.

Prohibits: (1) transferring a firearm to any person other than a licensee, unless the transfer is processed through a licensed dealer in accordance with national instant criminal background check system requirements, with exceptions; (2) a licensed manufacturer or dealer from failing to comply with reporting and record keeping requirements of this Act; (3) failing to report the loss or theft of the firearm to the Attorney General within 72 hours; (4) failing to report to the Attorney General an address change within 60 days; or (5) keeping a loaded firearm, or an unloaded firearm and ammunition for the firearm, knowingly or recklessly disregarding the risk that a child is capable of gaining access, if a child uses the firearm and causes death or serious bodily injury.

Prescribes criminal penalties for violations of firearms provisions covered by this Act.

Directs the Attorney General to: (1) establish and maintain a firearm injury information clearinghouse; (2) conduct continuing studies and investigations of firearm-related deaths and injuries; and (3) collect and maintain current production and sales figures of each licensed manufacturer.

Authorizes the Attorney General to certify state firearm licensing or record of sale systems.
