I went in to the hive today to add a refilled feeding can and to check on progress. The bees were much calmer and I was able to work much easier. They now have brood to care for and seem far more contented.

They are working hard to raise new brood, there is no way I'm getting a honey crop from this hive this year, but that's okay. I need many new bees for them to survive the winter, and she's laid hundreds.... by the time fall rolls around there should be enough....

Next time I go into the hive I'll get my wife or my eldest (the adopted one :)) to take some pictures of the bees.

My middle child wants to begin a new 4H project here based on the one in California on beekeeping as CO currently doesn't have that in 4H. I'll be getting her a new bee suit next year and begin teaching her how to work hives.

Congrats Damo. She must have got those drones lined out.
I'm thrilled, plus all that aggression is gone. I was in the hive, worked all the way to the front and put it back together with only getting hit once by a guard bee, and it was only one of the bumps, not an attempt to sting. All that with only the first dusting from the smoker.

Next time I won't worry so much about the wife or kid taking the pictures. I believe I have a few pictures from my first venture into the hive, but they aren't good because the bees were so aggressive I didn't want them to stand too closely.
