Yea a friend of mine was in the Navy in the mid 80's. He told me about the Phoenix System. He was trained as a gunner on the Phalanx System back when it was first being broadly used. He told me about experiments using the Phoenix system which was an electro laser system. He said that it was right out of Star Wars (literally...We're talking about Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative Program).
He thought it was cool as hell but very unreliable...but this was like back in 1985 or so.
