I was wrong about Jesus....

When I stated that he articulated the 'basis of morality' in his famous 'do unto others' speech. 'Do unto others' is known as the golden rule in ethics and has such a glaring problem that I am amazed I have only just realised it.

Imagine I am into auto-erotic asphyxiation. (I'm not BTW) Because I wished to be strangled whilst I jerked off doesn't mean others would. Or Imagine I were suicidal. Absurd consequences indeed.

He was still, however, much to the dislike of many Christians, exercising moral relativism in his statement....

LOL, well all things within reason. One cannot take into account all the perversions and mental illnesses of all humans in such a statement.

He was just saying that to get laid. He basically was saying 'If you want sex, then you have to go and give it to people you don't really want to have sex with.'

But then who adjudicates what is 'within reason'?

I've played devil's advocate for Jesus and tried to qualify his statement to take this into account, but to no avail. I won't bore you all with the workings of this but I think that is a fundamental flaw in the argument...

Ahh the old "what is within reason" issue. Like what are "good" morals, etc.

One can only define that for himself as Jesus apparently did.

You might just have a point. That would be a great movie, Jesus basically a player who was trying to get laid, but everything he says gets blown out of proportion until he is treated like a god....

Well, he tryed the 'good guy' approach to get laid all the time. He eventually realized that they just wanted to be friends. So he went with the whole 'God' thing for power reasons and thought women would love to have sex with a god.

Good guys always finish last with the ladies. they ladies have to have a few assholes before they realize the value of the good guys and need them to help raise the assholes children....

Some have tried to amend it and say "Do unto others as THEY would like to done unto". But there's obviously an even bigger hole there. You'd be in literal slavery for life trying to fulfill everyone elses wants.

It's just a rule of thumb. It's called a generalization. It's generally a good frame from which to address ethical dilemmas, assuming you're not a criminal psychopath, indifferent to the pains and "valuations" of others.

Then there are those who have the philosophy of do unto others before they do unto you. A common trait of paranoid neos. Kill em over there before they kill us over here.
