If you had to choose ...

I'm not into hero-worship, but if you had a choice to vote for any active politician in the world today, who would you choose? Quick picture, biog and reasons why ...

My choice:

Poul Nyrup Rasmussen

Forside-Poul-Nyrup2.jpg

Biog: President of the Party of European Socialists (2004 to date), Danish member of the European Parliament, Prime Minister of Denmark (1993-2001), President of the Global Progressive Forum (2003 to date). Born 1943.

Reasons: Poul is one of the architects and prime movers in the renewal of the European Social Model, a model which promotes the essential connection between economic performance and social justice. He has a long track record both in and out of office of delivering for working people, of addressing poverty and marginalisation in Denmark and across the globe, of advancing the cause of equality, especially with respect to women, and of advancing the cause of international law and international institutions as the proper vehicles for the resolution of international disputes.

In socialism, what is the incentive to work harder or to be more creative? If the rewards are the same?

And as far as social equality, are you saying the pay for any job is the same?

I don't have a political hero. All politicans pretty much suck and win by appealing to the lowest common denominator. But liberals are better than socialists my friend. You should come over to the dark side. Free market and liberty FTW!

Ron Paul

Congressman Paul’s consistent voting record prompted one of his congressional colleagues to say, “Ron Paul personifies the Founding Fathers’ ideal of the citizen-statesman. He makes it clear that his principles will never be compromised, and they never are.” Another colleague observed, “There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles. Ron Paul is one of those few.”

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul’s Record:

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Ron Paul's a dumbass who wants to abolish America.

OK, if libertarians really do give a fuck about human rights, why is everything on that list economic? Libertarians are just closet Republicans.

Hi solidarity, thanks for your question.

I've been an active member of a mainstream socialist party my entire adult life (I'm 46 now) and I have never heard anyone propose that everyone should get the same financial rewards no matter how hard they work or what job they do. Perhaps you have us mixed up with someone else?

By equality I mean essentially two things:

(a) everyone possesses the same civil and human rights irrespective of their gender, their sexuality, their social status, their colour, their ethnicity, their religion or humanism, their disability or any other characteristic that is used to divide people from each other and render one class of person less equal than another, and

(b) everyone should have access to essential, enabling public services such as healthcare, education, pensions and social protection on an equal basis.

Americans think the only form of socialism is marxism and that nothing else exists.

I think that there are a good many Marxists that think the same thing.

It's interesting how certain groups at opposite ends of the political spectrum reflect the same opinion.

Me, for instance, I don't believe in literal equality no matter the work done. But I do believe in equality of oppurtunity, and that things like food and healthcare are human rights. So in that way I'm a socialist.
