Real Time” host Bill Maher warned Democrats that they'll lose the 2020 presidential election if their message on immigration is designed to appeal only to other Democrats.

Turning the immigration issue into a “woke contest” will only hand the election to President Trump, the liberal late-night host said Friday.

During the show's panel discussion, Maher said he didn’t believe that immigration is a top 10 issue “in reality,” but stressed that it was a “campaign issue” on which Trump ran and won in 2016.

“If it becomes a 'woke' contest, then the Democrats lose on this,” Maher said. “Yes, they look better, but it’s impossible not to look better next to him!”

Panelist Wendy Sherman, who served in the State Department during the Obama administration, told Maher that Trump “created this immigration crisis,” pointing to his administration’s decisions on cutting aid to Central American countries, separating migrant families and “putting kids in cages.”

Maher, however, only chuckled at her remarks.

“This is what Democrats say, which only gets other Democrats," Maher told Sherman. "This is not the speech that is going to win any [swing] voters. You’ve [already] got the compassion vote!”

Maher is a consummate liar. Obama didn't "deport record numbers of illegal immigrants", his administration merely changed the way deportations were counted, to make it appear that way. Maher knows this. https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-obama-deportations-20140402-story.html

I think Maher is correct.
 
Maher is correct that Democrats will never draw any Republican voters over to their side if Democrats don't take a logical position on immigration, that addresses the problem. That makes sense. What makes just as much sense is that Democrats never stood a chance to draw Trump's most ardent fans across the line. So, as usual, it is a battle for the mushy middle. I think there will be some converts because not ALL Trump fans are motivated by immigration, and SOME struggle with compromising their morals.

Another huge factor: You can't rule out the disgust factor. The 2016 election was the clothespin election. Stick one on your nose and vote. Or not. Many sat that one out. Trump is disgusting and Hillary came with tons of baggage. I think Democrats got the message. The next nominee needs to be somebody people can respect, somebody dedicated, who stands up for what they believe in, and believes in the right things. One thing heard among Democrats: "No matter WHO gets the nomination, we ALL vote for that ONE CANDIDATE - whatever we have to do to get Trump OUT."

With the disgust factor gone, and the chance for a sensible and upstanding candidate to excite passion and reignite political activism, the left is at once excited and energized. I gotta tell ya. If somebody else doesn't come forward and start dominating the news that person is, amazingly enough, Bernie.

Nobody shook up the perception of the term 'Socialism' more than Bernie. He took the pox off the S-word. People aren't afraid of it any more. What's that? A word? You expect us to cower because you used a word you attached all this garbage to? Forget the garbage! It's a good word. What is so wrong about a society that wants to get together and get organized to do things to improve that society that they all live in?

And look past the pox on the word 'government,' too. All that is? - how a society gets organized to do things for itself. It's LOGICAL. We need to support good government, not cut it to the bare bones. Good government is a good thing. It's a big country in a very complicated world. It needs to be a big government to do everything it does for us.

So, if we want free college education, we know that has to be paid for in taxes, but what if having more smart people in the country results in more business and a bigger GDP? - which does what? Generates more revenue?

Bingo.

Maybe it MIGHT just COULD POSSIBLY BE that having a smarter populace actually PAYS FOR ITSELF.

And ya know what?

It COULD even pay back more than got put in.

Something to think about.

Especially when you've got to figure that at least SOME people who got more opportunity might be diverted from a life of CRIME, where they would COST THE SYSTEM and RAISE THE DEBT, to a life of being a Producer.
 
Democrats are not going to win by drawing Trump fans away.

They are going to win by turning out massive numbers to the polls and overwhelming them.

Maher has a point, but I think Trump's accusers came out after longer than that.
