I hope we dont figure out how to apply this to oursleves.

Science doesn't really know what causes aging. They need to before they can even start to think about stopping it.
A lot of the processes are, actually, understood. Apparently many of our cell types are pre-programmed to replicate just so many times; others undergo a process called "apoptosis" in which cells simply die off in response to some signal. Circulating hormones have an important role, but they apparently work in concert with other processes, because hormone replacement therapy has been pretty clearly shown to be carcinogenic to an unacceptable extent.
I think that aging is simply something we have to accept, hopefully graciously. Best strategy is to live well, eat healthily, exercise, and try to keep your stress levels within reason. Oh, and the latest thing I read is to keep warm! (for heart health).
If we stopped aging you could just kill yourself someday, or get a heart attack. Stopping aging in no way would make you immortal; there's just so many things that are more important and easier to solve, that if your plan is to save lives a gargantuan task like ending aging doesn't even show up on the list.
I have no doubt that humanity will solve the problem and end aging one day, however.
Only after they institute some serious and probably Machiavellian form of population control.
We can only discover the scientific way to end aging after we do Machiavellian population control?
It doesn't exactly follow.
I don't think she meant it was impossible. But if people stop dying of old age, you are certainly going to have to slow the birth rate somehow.
And there is no pleasant way to do that.
Thank you, that's exactly what I meant. I think that our young friend has not had the benefit of all the Sci-Fi literature that we have read on this topic. Heinlein's "Rammer" would make a good start and is a quick read.
No doubt in my mind. It is required reading for my children regardless.Indeed it would. In fact, Heinlein should be required reading in schools.

Well done, Damo. I made sure all of mine read him, as well as some other key authors.

Germany already has negative population growth. They can serve as a model for the rest of the world.
People as groups are pretty stupid and slow to learn.
As far as I am concerned I will live forever, my forever anyway. When I die my forever will end.
