Somewhat surprising. However, it would've banned abortion in case of rape, and would've, at the very least, applied a lot of pressure on doctors who thought that an abortion was necessary to save the life of the mother. It also would've essentially outlawed in vitro fertilization and banned many forms of birth control.

JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - Initiative 26, also known as the Personhood amendment, failed to pass Tuesday. The controversial measure would have made abortion illegal in Mississippi. The initiative asked voters if the term "person" should be defined to include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the equivalent thereof. Opponents had said Initiative 26 would have had far reaching and dangerous consequences that could endanger a woman's health.
 
Clearly, the author(s) of the initiative overreached. No sensible person would vote to ban abortion to save the mother's life, or in vitro fertilization. The fact that it failed even in Mississippi is evidence enough. What a ludicrous initiative.
 
even the current Republican governor had spoken out against it, saying the wording virtually guaranteed it would be overturned by the Supreme Court......

Barbour's announcement was probably one of the bigger parts of the campaign. There was a pretty huge shift in the later days of the campaign, from a large majority for, to a split electorate, to it's eventual 60-40 defeat. I initially thought it was certain to pass; but, after reading about the effects of its wording, it became apparent that it was a lot more radical than it initially seemed. Extending the ban on abortion to cases of rape alone makes the anti-abortion position much less popular. I also think that if it were possible to ban abortion by essentially declaring it murder, states would've done so already anyway.

If Mississippi did not pass it, this should send a message to the rest of the country. Leave women's rights alone!
