Big Money, I'm one of those people who has come to the conclusion that Liberalism is virtually its own religion, and that its adherents generally put their FAITH in the "progress" of humans, led by humans, apart from God (or removed from the idea of needing to believe in a god). This is not to say that people who identify themselves as "Liberal" will not also attest to believing in a god, but that they appear to put more FAITH in humans and their capability of ruling as gods or LIKE gods and establishing their OWN tenants to which everyone should follow in order to make the world a "better place".
I believe that this is why many Liberals are drawn to putting their FAITH in "scientific" theories, such as the theory of evolution. Although the theory of evolution doesn't directly claim to address the absolute "beginning of matter" or appearance of "life", it is almost always linked together with theories which attempt to do that. I don't think I've met an atheist who has not put their FAITH in the theory of evolution as (what they see) being the explanation or process by which humans came about or exist as today.
The theory of evolution also happens to show a sort of "progress" from something "lesser" to something "better" or "higher" in consciousness. Why wouldn't the people who accept and put FAITH in this "progressive" theory also believe that they can continue to "progress" from the world of today into a "better world" of tomorrow?...
