Israel prefers US ground assault on Iran rather than its own troops deployed

Samah Watad, a journalist in Haifa, says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s suggestion about sending troops to Iran appears driven more by political considerations than a realistic military plan.

She said since the beginning of the war, it has been framed not only as a campaign against Iran’s nuclear programme, but also as one that could “free the Iranian people” – a narrative aimed at the Israeli public.

However, Watad added she does not believe Israel is planning a ground deployment in Iran, noting the country’s size and the significant logistical challenges such an operation would entail.

Instead, she said Israel would prefer the United States to take on any potential ground involvement.

“I do not believe Israel is planning to send ground troops to Iran. Iran is simply too large and even with the damage Israel says it has caused, the military balance and geography makes such a move very difficult,” Watad told Al Jazeera.

Regardless of the source, I think it is factually true that as a military organization the IDF is not logistically or politically set up to send expeditionary forces hundreds or thousands of miles away from Israel. IDF never materially helped the United States in our conflicts in Afghanistan or Iraq.
