Tuesday marks five years since a crowd attacked the U.S. Capitol.
Five years since the riot at the U.S. Capitol, former special counsel Jack Smith is defending the indictment of President Donald Trump, saying the case was very strong and never political. Also, Jan. 6 defendants plan to hold a march in the District Tuesday. News4’s Paul Wagner reports. Some Jan. 6 defendants plan to hold a march in Washington, D.C., on the fifth anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The organizers include former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump.
Tarrio says justice has not been served for Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed by a U.S. Capitol police officer inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
"Join us as we march for Ashli on January 6th. We also march in memory of those who passed away. 5 years ago a beautiful life was taken from us. A veteran and a patriot. So I ask those that are able to attend please do so," he wrote on X.
A flyer he posted on X says the march will be held Tuesday, beginning at the Ellipse just before noon. He said it will honor all the lives lost that day.
Former special counsel says case against Trump was strong
The anniversary of Jan. 6 comes just days after former special counsel Jack Smith defended the indictment of Trump. In a recorded deposition released New Year's Eve, Smith said the criminal case against Trump was very strong and never political. The criminal case, which was filed against Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election, was dismissed after Trump was re-elected in 2024.
Last month, Smith, the man in charge of that investigation, defended his case in a deposition before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
"One of the strengths of our case and why we felt we had such strong proof is our witnesses were not gonna be political enemies of the president; they were going to be political allies," Smith said. "We had numerous witnesses who would say, 'I voted for President Trump.'"
