Jerry Brown's budget for California is 'honest' and 'very painful'

They'll likely avoid Washington we're real tax vampires here too

True, but given our recent rejection of a state income tax, repeal of certain taxes, and restoration of the 2/3rds rule, I think Olympia is finally getting the message. If they aren't...well, even this deep blue state may turn red in '12.

Awww I just noted your Emerald City status...and you are correct that we've made some policy progress- thanks to the last election.

Were you surprised the alcohol initiatives lost?

No. The ad campaigns ran against both initiatives were strong, and I think most voters felt that since we need to tax something, it may as well be liquor - that was my reasoning in voting no on both, two votes which I sort of regret (not that it makes any difference).

Since I voted against the income tax, I voted to maintain those sales taxes, but some people just want to have the whole farm. I am surprised the licquor initiatives failed, because our system makes no sense, and the attack ads were so untruthful they shouldn't have had much effect.

The fact of the matter is that the state maintains control instead of allowing the private sector-including distributors and brewers/distillers. The state controls the price/availability and gets the tax-should state government get the booze and the gambling (lottery)???

No, some people want to shrink government instead of tax the people.

Last time Brown was in office he balenced the budget.

I know you want to hate him because hes a democrat.

Desh, you have to have a balanced budget every year in California.

I don't hate Brown. I know Jerry Brown. I know him through two friends who worked for him in Oakland and I know him through an Oakland real estate deal we were doing that he got involved in while Mayor.

I actually like a lot of his budget here. So no Desh I don't want to hate Brown. What I said, which was true, was his proposed cuts are a lot like Arnold's. Of course as this article shows look at the Democratic reaction in the legislature. All this being proposed is ok now because it is being done by Brown not Arnold. Just read the first half of the article.

Gov. Brown strips cell phones from state employees

The governor ordered state agency and department heads to collect half of the approximately 96,000 state-issued cell phones used by public employees, a move he said will save California at least $20 million a year. Brown also plans to return his own state-issued cell phone, said Evan Westrup, a spokesman for the governor.

so far and for the most part, brown is doing much better than i expected

slashing the budget and government and stupid perks....i'm not sure how i feel about the five year temporary taxes...california would do well to get out of his major budget problems, however, i'm generally against raising taxes, but if a few hundred dollars a year spread out through taxpayers helps california get back on her feet...it might well be worth it

Colorado is beautiful, but it is different from California, people won't be moving, they love the land, they love the Pacific.
I'm not talking about people. I hope all the Californians stay in California. I hope the businesses move here.

You mean he is a Democrat. He basically proposed many of the same cuts Arnold did.
Yeah, but Ahnold is a republican and thus had a hard time getting the legislation to go with those cuts. Maybe a sane democrat can actually get it done.

Brown has always been known as a frugal guy. He lives his life very frugally. I like his phone proposal. It ultimately is going to come down to how willing is he to face off with the public employee pensions and the unfunded liabilities? It could be one of those Nixon to China moments where only a Democrat can negotiate that in this state. If that is the case then I'm rooting for Brown to do it.
