Jo Jorgensen's Big Idea: A truly market-based system of health care

Under Jorgensen's plan, health care would no longer be tied to employment. Individuals would shop around for their own individual health care plans. And in a big diversion from today's system, health insurance would be modeled after car insurance. Individuals would be on the hook to pay for regular check-ups and maintenance, similar to how consumers pay for getting gas, oil changes and their brakes repaired. Insurance would kick in for unexpected and catastrophic events.

While Democrats are moving closer to a government-run single-payer health care plan, Jorgensen takes the opposite approach. She says the closest thing now to a single-payer system is health care through Veterans Affairs hospitals, which Jorgensen considers a horrible system with "veterans literally dying on the waiting list."

"Every time I hear a politician say 'we need Medicare-for-all,' what goes through my mind is they are really saying 'We need VA Hospitals-for-all," Jorgensen said. "And I don't know anybody who thinks that the VA hospitals are the shining star."

We used to have that years ago. It was called major medical and it covered the catastrophic events. Regular visits were paid for out of pocket, the prices were known, and things were affordable. The premiums were cheap much like renters insurance.

The way it is now insurance companies are the doctors customer the patient is secondary.

I always gave a yuge cash discount for patients that paid cash.
I knew a dental office that didn't accept any insurance or medicaid, cash or credit card only. Their fees were lower even than what Medicaid reimbursed - way lower and they made a ton of money.
No accounts receivable, no admin costs for collecting or dealing with insurance.
Imagine that. Patients shop around for the best price and/or quality, pay, then submit the bill to their insurance for reimbursement. Like the article in the OP stated, elective Lasik surgery cost has decreased by 70% since its inception while insurance reimbursed costs have increased 150% during that same period.
Payments assigned to insurance should be for catastrophic events .
Medical insurance is a scam and obamacare made it worse. Gubmint run single payer would somehow function but watch % of health care to GNP go even higher than our present 17% (highest in the world) with low quality VA type single payer.
If dims get control of the congress and presidency they may well ram this down our throats like obamacare. Not saying repubs had a better plan, they had and have none at all.
But Jo Jorgensen (the libertarian candidate) actually has a viable plan that makes sense. Which is why she has no chance.
A few yrs. back I submitted my own MooseCare on DCJunkies which would have been the best of all. It would give all citizens from choice like Jorgensen's to shitty gubmint run "free" VA type with one or two options in between.

That's why people like Jo and Spike need to move into one of the 2 major parties.

Gary Johnson was a libertarian minded republican candidate in '12 and even Fox considered him a wack job. Of course he became one in '16 but he was serious in '12.
I don't think either of the two major parties is ready for common sense solutions. It was all about 'what can I take/get from the other side'. Now it's worse. 'How can I fuck over the other side'.

But it's an inconvenient truth that until something major happens, presidents will be made from either the Dems or the repubs. That's just how it is. So we either demand change within those parties or we wait.

It's why Trump was elected. Major change from the status quo.

Vets love the VA. All vets I know w use it over their regular insurance or medicare. The problem is we keep going to war they can never catch up.
The VA is like medicare in that they save money by making people better or maintaining their health. They are not paid by the procedure.

You are almost understanding the problem of linking healthcare and jobs. It is an international market and our companies compete with corporations that do not have the cost of healthcare and its servicing in their costs. It makes us less competitive.

You have no idea why oinking healthcare to employment is a problem. Stop pretending.

An obvious point, Medicare-for-all has an easy comparison, and it is not VA hospitals. Medicare-for-all would be like Medicare, but for all. If you think Medicare is terrible, then you will think Medicare-for-all is terrible. If you think it is great, you will think Medicare-for-all is great.

When The VA went to a point system- THEY FUCKED IT UP.

That needs to go first thing.

You have two systems crashing into each other right now- our Capitalist system- and our Social safety net system.

We need a system that allows prices to be competitive- NOT JUST ALLOW THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY TO RUN AWAY WITH ITSELF BY INTENTIONALLY INFLATING THE COSTS OF HEALTHCARE AND HEALTHCARE INSURANCE and pricing most everyone out of the market. Who was it that said- STOP THE INSANITY?

NOW REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS GET TO WORK- GIVE AND TAKE- NEGOTIATE- GROW UP AND ACT LIKE YOU ARE A LEGISLATIVE BODY AND FIGURE THIS SHIT OUT!

The people are suffering!

It is terrible in AK. Very few docs take it and those that do basically limit the patients to existing old patients. Most pts. that transition to Medicare have to find a new doc (good luck) so they just end up in ER's.

Jeez, did you read the link in the OP and my anecdotal reference to a dental office that did not accept any ins. or Medicaid? ?

Once again read the link in the OP. Take insurance out of the picture, allow patients to price shop and watch fees adjust to the free market. And when they do elective procedures have been shown to decrease by 70% in the same period that assigned benefit fees have gone up 150%.

I voted for Trump , ahem, against the media, against what dims did at the Kav hearings, against the Mueller investigation, against antifa and the BLM riots. Too much to vote against. Jo's health plan alone wasn't enough for me to vote for her. But it's a good plan and it makes sense. Why can't repubs propose something like that? You don't have answer, I know it already. Just curious to see if you'd answer honestly.

This will change, and soon.

We are going to at last build the health care system the American people have always deserved: one that finally provides free universal health care coverage; reins in overall health care expenses; and tackles the deep-seated inequities in our health care system.

We will build a health care system that is driven by the needs of patients and the people who care for them, instead of the profit motives of corporations.

We will tackle entrenched racial disparities in health care, stand up to big pharmaceutical companies, and make it easier to access mental health and substance use disorder treatment and long-term services and support.

Democrats will making it easy and free to go to the doctor, get prescription medicines, and access preventive testing and treatments.

Generations of Democrats have been united in the fight for universal health care.

We are proud our party welcomes advocates who want to build on and strengthen the Affordable Care Act with our Medicare for All plan, which is critical to ensuring that basic human rights like health care are available to all.

Yes, hopefully dims and pukes will work together in continuing to dismantle Obamacare.

Docs will work for free? Well I'll be.
reins in overall health care expenses;
Yes, now that Biden will be pres. docs will work for free. That should cut costs drastically.

Let me guess. All free. Now pharmaceutical companies will all operate at a loss. I better sell my pharm stocks.

Which is very much insurance driven.

Who will set the fees docs can charge? Gubmint? Oh I forgot, there will be no fees. Docs will work for free.
