Joseph P. Kennedy II said today he will not make a bid for the senate seat held by his late uncle Edward M. Kennedy, in a bombshell announcement expected to draw candidates-in-waiting out from the wings.

“Given all that my uncle accomplished, it was only natural to consider getting back involved in public office, and I appreciate all the calls of support and friendship that have poured in,” Kennedy said in a statement posted on the web site of Citizens Energy, of which he is the founder.

“My father called politics an honorable profession, and I have profound respect for those who choose to advance the causes of social and economic justice in elective office,” Kennedy said. “After much consideration, I have decided that the best way for me to contribute to those causes is by continuing my work at Citizens Energy Corporation.”

Kennedy’s announcement dramatically lessens the possibility that the so-called “Kennedy seat” will remain in the family, with the late senator’s wife Victoria Reggie Kennedy the only other member of the storied clan seen as a possible successor.

It's time to end "royal" families in the US. Too many Kennedys, too many Bush's, too many Roosevelts, too many Clintons are in politics. Out of 300 million people we can insist on something better than this and easily find it.

There was like one son of FDR that made it into the house, and you never heard from another Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt was so distantly related it doesn't count.

joe's got some skeletons in the closet and this is going to be a high profile race. Im hoping Romney abandons the presidential pursuit and re-runs for this seat. he gave old ted a run for his money back in the 90's. All the rest of the people looking at the seat are lightweights if you ask me.

First this changes nothing about what I said.

Secondly FDR was in school when his cousin became President and his cousin was his inspiration.

We do not need to have families who believe they have a right to any office based on their birth and name.
