The mission would have been to spare our ego.

In my view, there is no point risking American soldiers for people who will not defend themselves. We had 20 years to train and equip an Afghan National Army, and they evaporated in a week.

I found it remarkable that they are not willing to risk their lives fighting for their nation, but they are willing to risk their lives clinging to the landing gear of a jet airplane taking off.

How is it possible to reconcile such a phenomenon?

The answer is stark.

It is because their government was so corrupt it was not worth fighting for, but they want freedom so bad it is worth risking life over.

They didn't refuse to fight because they were afraid to risk their lives.

They refused to fight for something that was not worth fighting for.

That is what we were supporting.

It had to end, and there was no neat way to do it.

Bolton is a Trump hater so his comments should be taken with a grain of salt.

As has been stated ad nauseum, it wasn’t the withdrawal. By and large, the country was willing to accept the consequences. The consequences they aren’t accepting, are the stranded citizens. There’s no spinning out of it, Biden owns this.
