The Force is With Me
Another Prime Bush Ally Dumped-- Aussie Howard "Suffers Humiliating Defeat"
http://www.opednews.com/articles/genera_rob_kall_071124_another_prime_bush_a.htm

In a rout that will, hopefully, be a harbinger of things to come in the US, right wing, Bush rectal appendage John Howard, one of the true fascists of the 21st century has been excreted from Australian politics.

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Australian Prime Minister John Howard suffered a humiliating defeat in national elections Saturday, according to preliminary results, most likely ending the political career of one Asia's most enduring conservative leaders and a key ally of U.S. President George W. Bush in the region.

Voters were ready to hand control of the government to Australia's opposition Labor party, headed by former diplomat Kevin Rudd, who has promised to boost relations with China, pull some troops from Iraq, and re-make Australia as a leader in the global effort to stop global warming.

The defeat appears so complete that the 68-year-old Mr. Howard, Australia's second-longest-serving prime minister, appeared likely to lose his own parliamentary seat, which he has held for 33 years. Still, Rudd ran as a free trade advocate, just like Howard. But Rudd promised to be a global warming activist.

One thing that helped Rudd and his labor party beat Howard's party was Howard's backers were caught distributing fake literature suggesting that the labor party supported Islamic extremists. (Swiftboat ads, anyone?)
Al Jazeera reports that Rudd promises to withdraw 500 troops from Iraq, just leaving a small number to aid in security. He also promised to become more independent of the US on Foreign Policy.

Defeated Howard had promised, that if he was re-elected, he'd keep Australian troops in Iraq.

It appears that the way to obscurity for Leaders of US allies is to unflinchingly support George W. Bush.

Amen

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Despite their famously conservative bent, I've always hoped the Aussies were too level-headed to hang onto that belligerent bulldog forever.

:clink:

Bush supporter Ernie Fletcher also bit the dust a few weeks ago :clink:
And the demoncrat opponent was not much to brag about either.

Now if we can just ditch Mitch next year.

Some may celebrate the decline, and fall, of the warmongering Mr Howard.

However, i take greater pleasure in the fact that the new Australian Prime Minister is called 'Kevin'. Classic.

I was a bit worried that Howard's party would be returned. I'm really glad they were thrown out. Bush is deeply unpopular here, but not the US, no party that had an anti-US policy would ever be elected in Australia. Howard was kicked out for domestic policy reasons. We also got sick of his lies.

What lies?

He had been in power a long time and you wanted change. Unfortunately you have one of the economies that will be most affected by global warming regulations/restrictions that Rudd will push for and you will feel it.
Good for him ending your role in Iraq though.

The people who truly got pwned were the Democrats. Dead now.

Dubya is like the kid in middle school with braces and body odor.

Being friends with him is actually a liability.

Standard Con response: But, at least Dubya is a tad better than Gore/Clinton/Kerry/Edwards/Obama!

My understanding is that Australians are as against the Iraq war as Americans are. Many of the same dynamics about the war and politics appear mirrored in both countries.

But I've heard Rudd promise to distance Austrlian foreign policy from US policy. Am I wrong?

What lies? Even one of his own senators called him "the lying rodent".

He lied about no new taxes. He lied about not abusing the power of being in control of the lower house and the senate. He lied about indusrial relations. The lies are legion.

As for the economy and the environment - the economy is just a tool, the environment is where we live.

There has been no popular support for the Iraq invasion and occupation here. In fact there were huge marches in the cities against it. Howard asked Bush to take us to that party without consulting us, we noted it and held it against him. It wasn't a big issue in the election in terms of debate or discussion, it was an issue that sat there like a blind boil, festering underneath the surface.

Yes. they're finished. The Greens are in the ascendancy.

The Greens are kind of the same, I guess, in their political positions, except more leftwing. The Democrats weren't ferocious enough, and were too willing to deal with the two parties. The Greens want to become THE big party, while the Democrats were content to just stay small. I guess that's what killed the Democrats off.

How many third parties do you guys have, now? We have none. :)

Rudd is very pro-American and mirrors the average Australian in that view. However he is of the view that Howard was far too close to Bush, so close that our ability to propose an independent foreign policy suffered. We saw Blair as Bush's poodle, we saw Howard as Bush's deputy sheriff in SE Asia and the South Pacific and we resented it. Rudd will have a realistic and respectful policy relationship with the US but it won't be sycophantic. I think it's fair to say it will be independent but not alienated from our closest ally.

Too close to Bush, that is like saying you got too close to Jessica Simpson and accidently copped a feel, so what? Leave it to an Australian they are practically Canadians after all?

Which one of the Simpsons is she? I know Lisa and Maggie but there's another one??

Sounds like good policy.
