Judge denies evangelist's request for new trial

TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) -- A federal judge in Arkansas has denied evangelist Tony Alamo's request for a new trial on child-sex charges.

In an order issued Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Harry Barnes rejected the motion by Alamo, who was convicted in July of 10 counts of transporting minors across state lines for sex. The 74-year-old Alamo had argued that prosecutors did not prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and that prosecutors should have been forced to reveal the identity of two confidential informants.

Barnes ruled that Alamo received a fair trial and that there were no errors warranting a new one.

An attorney for Alamo did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Alamo could face up to 175 years in prison. A sentencing date hasn't been set.
