Conservative politicians peddle ‘mind-bending’ theory that gun control enabled the Holocaust

Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, dismantled the notion that an unarmed population enabled mass extermination.

"It is mind-bending to suggest that personal firearms in the hands of the small number of Germany's Jews (about 214,000 remaining in Germany in 1938) could have stopped the totalitarian onslaught of Nazi Germany when the armies of Poland, France, Belgium and numerous other countries were overwhelmed by the Third Reich," Greenblatt said in a statement to the Daily News.


In 1938, a new gun law loosened gun ownership, but further restricted access for Jews.

"The idea that supporters of gun control are doing something akin to what Hitler's Germany did to strip citizens of guns in the run-up to the Second World War is historically inaccurate and offensive, especially to Holocaust survivors and their families," he said in a statement.
