Justin Holt Killed By Girlfriend In Accidental Shooting

12/06/2013

A playful gesture turned out to be a deadly mistake.

Justin Holt, 22, was accidentally shot and killed by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Erin Steele, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The couple had taken turns "dry firing" a new, unloaded gun their friend had purchased while the couple and two other pals hung out at a Boca Raton, Fla. home on Sunday.

Later, police said, the gun's owner, Joshua Henry, loaded the weapon and set it down.

Not knowing it was loaded, Steele picked up the .9mm handgun and fired it at Holt, shooting him in the chest.

Holt was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Holt's sister, Olivia, told WPBF her brother and Steele were inseparable.

"She was with Justin all the time," Olivia Holt said. "They loved each other a lot."

Police are investigating the incident, but thus far, no one has been charged.

Holt's grandfather told the Sun-Sentinel her family has no ill will toward Steele.

"We have a lot of compassion for her because she's got to live with that, no matter what she does, for the rest of her life," Michael DiFiore said.

Policy Mic reported that accidental gun killings accounted for 858 deaths in 2012.

Edit: This is in response to her saying guns aren't toys.

Desh, that is dead on accurate. The first thing anyone teaches others about guns is that you treat them all as if they were loaded because they "just aren't toys." Never point a weapon "lovingly" :palm: or otherwise at anyone except for obvious reasons.

and that gets ignored by gun owners all the time and this shows it

No, it doesn't. You can argue this till the cows come home but the vast majority of gun owners do not ignore this. If they did you'd hear about this sort of event multiple times a day. But you don't...because "gun owners" know they are in possession of deadly weapons and treat them as such. But you'll never read in the news that:

LEANINGRIGHT, LOCAL GUN OWNER, HANDLES GUN SAFELY AND NO ONE GETS HURT

So a blanket statement like you gave should never go unchallenged because all you'll read about are the idiots acting irresponsibly...and they are a small, small percentage of "gun owners."

See, the basic problem is that right up to the instant they had their "incident", each and every single one of those "idiots" would tell every person they meet they are RESPONSIBLE gun owners.

So what do we do?
