Karen Read guilty of driving under the influence.

NiftyNiblick

1960s Chick Magnet
One year probation and mandatory classes on the consequences of drinking and driving.

Not guilty of Second Degree Murder.
Not guilty of Vehicular Homicide.
Not guilty of leaving the scene of an accident in which someone was killed.

For once, a jury got a case perfectly right, but everything won't be right.

The cop's family will pursue a wrongful death civil suit anyway.
Being understandably distraught doesn't forgive them for being assholes,
but that's how people are.

Nobody will look into who really killed the cop
as the evidence suggests that other cops may have beaten him up at a party,
tossed him out into the snow to die of hypothermia, and tried to frame Ms. Read to protect themselves.

Read is stuck with legal bills she'll be spending her life to pay off,
and will never be compensated for what she's been put through for three or four years.

She won't be going to prison because by some miracle,
a competent jury was seated.

How was her tail light broken?

The only time you should be able to sue for wrongful death is when someone is found guilty of causing the death

Zimmerman should have not been sued for wrongful death
Yeah, that's not true at all. Simpson was found not guilty, then he was sued and found liable.

So you admit that juries in the blue state of Massachusetts are generally incompetent.

Criminally guilty is an entirely different level of proof than a civil trial, so it would be bizarre to hold a civil trial to that level. Also there are many civil cases that are not even criminal cases.

Sadly, our legal system is broken, so that a good looking, upper middle class, white woman can get away with almost anything.
You didn't follow the case every day.
You're just pulling an opinion out of your ass, aren't you?

The Commonwealth made nothing approaching a case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Their burden was to convince all twelve jurors, and they didn't have anything close to a convincing argument.
The defense's expert witnesses sounded far more credible than the prosecution's.

My daughter is a Lieutenant Detective--a senior officer-- with BPD.
She strongly believes that the verdict was correct.

Many prosecutors are more concerned about convictions and closed cases than finding the truth.
It's the nature of the beast.
Fuck them.

No, if you feel I am in the wrong, feel free to educate me.

Here is a question: do you think Read is actually innocent? Or do you think investigation of Read was so poorly done, that she should be found not guilty? There is a serious difference between the two.

There are plenty of Blacks serving a lot of time under those exact same circumstances.

But here is a question, why were the police so shy about collecting evidence on her? Was it because she was an upper middle class, good looking white woman?

The defense's expert witnesses sounded far more credible than the prosecution's.
And she was upper middle class, so could hire credible sounding expert defense witnesses.

She strongly believes that the verdict was correct.
Where I disagree is that this entire investigation was completely botched. The verdict is wrong, because the process used to get to that verdict is wrong. The best you can say about the verdict is that given what a disaster the process was, it was the best possible verdict.
