TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - With large swaths of the Gulf Coast still in ruins from Hurricane Katrina, rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos near the University of Alabama's football stadium.

About 10 condominium projects are going up in and around Tuscaloosa, and builders are asking up to $1 million for units with granite countertops, king-size bathtubs and 'Bama decor, including crimson couches and Bear Bryant wall art.

While many of the buyers are Crimson Tide alumni or ardent football fans not entitled to any special Katrina-related tax breaks, many others are real estate investors who are purchasing the condos with plans to rent them out.

And they intend to take full advantage of the generous tax benefits available to investors under the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005, or GO Zone, according to Associated Press interviews with buyers and real estate officials.

Yeah, I can't say I'm shocked. "Tax breaks" are the way to rebuild the gulf coast. Conservative ideology at its best.

We might as well put that money directly into public works projects, and really build some shit they way they did in the 1930s.

But that would be earmarks GASP!

anyone catchin on to why cons like tax breaks and hate earmarks so much ?

They probably figured it's unwise to build so close to the coast. What would you do? And they are providing jobs as well. As time goes on, the coast will be rebuilt, but common sense tells us the safer parts of the state will be rebuilt first. Quit your whining about tax breaks you moron. What the fuck else would bring money into the region? Seriously, explain how you would bring investors in to buy land in a hurricane zone.

They will sell to. Alabama has some crazy diehard fans. And now that they have snake oil salesman, Nick Saban, as their coach they are going to be very competitive.

You mean like the holes they dug and then filled back in? Real constructive. Much better than letting actual business get a foothold in the area.

A tax break can help redevelop an area. It's not like public money was squandered here. This is a non issue, pounced upon by idiots.

What do dems prefer, earmarks because it's cash straight out of the public till? You people need to learn the arts of rationality and honesty.
