My daughter has taken a liking to ET. I always loved the movie myself. But, I realized today it contains a valuable lesson for children that I never really though much about before.
She's not yet 3, so when the scary music starts and the people in space suits show up, I can see she gets a little uneasy.
So, I calm her telling her, "it's okay, it's just the stupid government people, in costumes."
She always responds to the scary parts by saying, "it's fake." She learned that last Halloween as we explained the costumes and decoration were not real. But there is nothing fake about the portrayal of the antagonist in ET. They don't really mean any harm and the threat they pose is mitigated by their incompetence.
