Halloween-Masked Robber Severely Beaten

PHOENIX -- A man accused of donning a Halloween mask and costume to pull of a robbery is in critical condition after he was attacked by a group of partygoers.

Justin Pare, 33, suffered a skull fracture in the failed robbery attempt, said Sgt. Andy Hill of the Phoenix Police Department. Three other people suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Pare entered an apartment through a window at 9826 North Seventh Avenue at about 10:45 p.m. Friday, Hill said. A 29-year-old man said he initially believed it was some kind of joke until Pare reached into his coat and took out a silver revolver, Hill said.

He demanded money and told the victim, "Don't move or I'll shoot," Hill said. The victim refused and ran out of his apartment into the courtyard area of the apartment complex, Hill said.

Pare ran after him and waved a gun at other neighbors who were attending a party in the same apartment complex courtyard, Hill said.

Pare demanded money from those victims, then struck a 32-year-old man in the head with a gun, Hill said. The man Pare had been chasing grabbed a bat and struck the robber, causing him to drop two guns, Hill said.

Other neighbors and partygoers then jumped on Pare, striking him a number of times with a bat and a two-by-four, Hill said. Sometime during the incident, someone called the police, Hill said.

Pare's mask came off as he was being struck and he fled into the parking lot, Hill said. Officers located the vehicle he was driving and took him into custody in a parking lot at 12223 N. 21st Ave., Hill said.
