Portland says it's voluntary but we all know how that works. If the city asks and you say no, they put your name on THE LIST of homeowners who the police and fire dept will not respond to,

march 19 2017 Faced with an intractable homeless problem, officials in Portland are thinking inside the box.

A handful of homeless families will soon move into tiny, government-constructed modular units in the backyards of willing homeowners.

Portland officials are looking for four backyards to place its Accessory Dwelling Units, what some people may call a granny flat, or a tiny home minus wheels.

Under the pilot program taking effect this summer, the homeowners will take over the heated, fully plumbed tiny houses in five years and can use them for rental income.

If anything this is too generous to the homeowners.

Tiny houses are a great market solution that governments are inhibiting.

You're really going to have to provide some substantiation of your accusation.

They will be offering homeowners free rental income. I seriously doubt they will need to coerce anyone. I wonder if they even need to be this generous. It's probably only zoning laws that are stopping homeowners from doing this themselves.

It's really fucked up for the government to have zoning and building codes that prevent the average joe from simply doing this. but the government will hand out to a handful of special friends the right to get it for free at the government's expense after only 5 years. That's a ridiculously short time to affect any real change. Portland has entire communities that live in the parks and under the bridges along waterfront park. Hundreds of people every night. I've seen it myself countless times when I used to ride PDX (on my awesome one of a kind custom made bicycle that both purist roadies and hipster fixie riders hate with a passion. The tall bike people in PDX liked my bike. Fun fact: I saw tall bikes in a group of about 20 or 30 riding Columbus OH. I had my bike in the van and I was tempted to pull over and try to tag along to meet some creative people, but I had to finish my work at the project a few blocks away. Damn shame I didn't have a few minutes to chase along because tall bike people are the most fun to party with. Bicycles! ).

Reason has had lots of fascinating articles about this. One little house that the government confiscated and destroyed in some city was almost like a coffin on wheels. But it could be locked, it was warm, dry and perfectly adequate shelter.

Yep. It could happen without zoning laws. Depends on how they allow the water and sewer hook up or make them use temporary holding methods. Hardly worth hooking up water and sewer for such a small return as an investment.

i wonder why the rich people would let the homeless in their yards.

A) The illegals they usually hire are leaving.

B) They are afraid of being caught using illegal labor.

C) They have to get cheap labor from somewhere to do their dirty work........

All in all, I think its a great idea and hope the homeowners thoroughly enjoy their new neighbors.....lmao !

The idiot politician in this video...

He says the tiny houses are not an alternative to living in a real home. Maybe not, but they are an alternative to living on the street.

He says the people might live there and feel like their problems are solved. Well, one of their most urgent problems will be solved.

Yeah, it might be difficult for an existing home, but if they loosen up the zoning laws then it seems like that might not be too hard to solve in new construction.
