Actually it came from Bowles-Simpson but yes Obama has said he is willing to look at changes to S.S. and Medicare. wanderingbear is yelling at the wrong person.

WASHINGTON -- The Senate’s top Republican suggested specific cuts to popular safety-net entitlement programs – Medicare and Social Security – as the kind of proposals his party wants on the table in talks with the White House over the year-end budget crisis.

Negotiations have hit a stalemate, but Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the minority leader, provided the first GOP counter-offer to President Obama’s push for higher taxes on the wealthy. McConnell said his party would like to increase the Medicare eligibility age and ask wealthier Americans to pay higher Medicare premiums. He also suggested paring back the cost-of-living increases given to Social Security beneficiaries, a nonstarter for many Democrats.

Who can possibly imagine that Medicare won't be cut by anyone looking at the US budget, Dem or Rep? It is ABSOLUTELY UNSUSTAINABLE.

If you think Medicare shouldn't be cut, you are seriously unaware of some very basic realities of our situation.

I have no problem cutting benefits to people who are already receiving $80k or more in pension benefits and interest and dividends on their assets.....however, the claim made this very day by someone on this board was that it was the Republicans who were clamoring to cut benefits to the poorest recipients.......anyone who believes that to be true is out of their fucking mind......

Does it strike you as plausible that any politician, including Republicans, would call for cuts in benefits to the poor, instead of the rich?

Or might it be more plausible that a Liberal wants to present Republicans that way?
