Life is good.

Mott the Hoople

Sweet Jane
Tonight I cooked my lovely bride Chinese style braised oxtails in a carmalized soy/ginger sauce served on aromatic jasmine rice and a side of broccoli tossed in EVO and broiled with a little parm cheese.

For dessert I'm sitting on my patio smoking an authentic Cuban Monticristo #2 with a glass of Kraken rum.

Props to my Cuban American friend for thinking of me.

That reminds me, about thirty years ago I was going back home to Poole, Dorset from London on the train and I found a box of 25 Romeo y Julieta cigars that somebody had left behind. Damn they were some seriously fine cigars, enhanced by the fact that they were 100% freebies!!

Only the truly uninitiated think Cuban cigars are worth a shit anymore. Dominicans outpaced the Cubans years ago.

But as Sheryl Crow says "if it makes you happy"

I hope you meant that you cooked that for her, rather than you cooked her?

Well I had to pay for these. Fortunately those who come back to the U.S. from Cuba now can bring back $100 worth of Cigars. So when my wifes co-worker told her she was visiting Cuba to see family I gave her a $100 to pick me up some Montecristo #2. I can see why they are considered one of the most popular cigars in the world.

Yes indeed they have. I've smoked both Dominican and Nicaraguans that are better than these Montecristo's but to say Cuban Cigars aren't worth shit anymore is just silly. Cuba still makes some of the best Cigars in the world. I was actually surprised by the price. To buy one of these in Canada or the U.K. would be around $25. At the State store in Havana they were $10 and, to be honest, they taste almost identical to a Dominican Montecristo.

Now if you could get a pre embargo cigar then you will know what people are talking about when it comes to Cubans.

Don't get me wrong, they aren't horrible and I would prefer one to some of the shit sold in the US. But they aren't as good as they are hyped. I have had them and Dominicans are better.

It is just another industry castros devastating socialist policies destroyed. Sad

They have never been as good as hyped. They were always considered very good cigars, pre-embargo but there were plenty of American companies that made good quality cigars in that time period too. However, premium cigars went out of vogue in the US for quite some time. Since the Embargo there's has always been a snob factor in regards to Cuban cigars due to their rare availability in the US.

Having said that I have smoked both a Cohiba lancero and a Cohiba esplendido and both Habana's are two of the best I have ever had. That was back in the late 90's though when I was doing some work in Miami and access to Cuban Cigars was available if you were willing to pay the premium.

I will say this about Habana's. If your preference in cigars is to the mild or spicy kind than Habana's would probably not be your kind of cigar. Most Habana's are very strong full bodied cigars.
