I wonder if you know that he was offered the part of Dick Hallorann in the Shining? Although he became famous after Dr. Strangelove he found Kubrick's perfectionism too much to take. So he stipulated that he wouldn't do more than 100 takes for any scene, so the part was given to somebody else instead.
