Looks like Bush blinked!

President Bush and Sen. John McCain have reached an agreement on legislation covering tribunals for enemy combatant suspects, NBC News reported Thursday.

Details on the deal were not immediately available.

The compromise comes amid a stalemate that has divided the House and Senate on the treatment of detainees. The two sides remained at odds this week over how to adhere to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and — simultaneously — give the CIA wide leeway to conduct interrogations.

too early yet to say who blinked. McCain has a history of kissing up to bush after being screwed by Bush. I will withold judgement till I read the results of the compromise.

LOL. Sounds like backtracking already. Yesterday I read thread after thread about how great McCain was as he had served overseas and wasn't going to take this. Now we get, "Well he always caves..."

Which is it? Bright light of the R Party or just another excuse?

You see Damo, the more liberal group of us sometimes disagree with eachother... Yesterday I was singing McCain's praises on this issue. I still am, until I hear otherwise. Liberals dont all march in the same direction at all times, we can disagree!

Rubbish, you'll all march in the same direction as soon as you've heard what to say about this new deal. I'm pretty sure it's going to be some atrocious thing about how we are "torturing" people and how McCain bowed to bush "again"...

BULLSHIT, I respect McCain for having stood up and I expect that he has not caved. This is an issue I do not belive he would cave on.

A compromise is what I want... One that defines torture and works out FOR ALL OF AMERICA TO READ a fair plan that will ensure a fair trial for the detaniees and prohibit outragous treatment of POW's.

I do not belive McCain will go along with outragous treatment of POW's.

On this one, I think Bush is the one who likely backed down. I think Bush was trying to make Democrats look weak on terrorism with the issue, and McCain was not going to allow politics to be played with POW's~!

Bush is the one who said, "its my way or it wont be done."

Thus, a compromise means BUSH blinked!

“There’s no doubt that the integrity and letter and spirit of the Geneva Conventions have been preserved,” McCain said.

McCain said the deal is consistent with the Detainee Treatment Act and preserves the integrity of the Geneva Conventions.

The whole "bullshit" thing... Come on Jarod. I have seen it time and again. This whole, "We don't walk lockstep" crap is just that, crap. Once the left has it in their teeth they'll be on about this all together with one voice. They've done it for the past three years with Bush. I constantly hear that McCain caved, from both sides depending on what he is doing at the moment...

It will happen again, the cry will be loud and constant and all we'll hear about is how the Rs got it all wrong, even in compromise.

One official said that under the agreement, the administration agreed to drop language that would have stated an existing ban on cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment was enough to meet Geneva Convention obligations. Convention standards are much broader and include a prohibition on "outrages" against "personal dignity."

Again I call BULLSHIT... You have not seen me say McCain caved. The only bad thing I have said about McCain was that he was warming up to the Religous right!

Cool.

That was pretty much the issue. To not fuck with the Geneva conventions. We don't want to go down that slippery slope.

Bush didn't blink. Bush hasn't blinked yet in the prosecution of the War on Terror. McCain is a nimrod, he is almost a pinhead, probably due to the torture he received as a POW, and someone should ask him, how much our abiding by the GC helped him with his captors? Only civilized nations uphold the Geneva Conventions, and we don't go to war with civilized nations. Terrorist organizations spread across the globe, have not signed on to the Geneva Conventions, and literally laugh at the thought of "humane treatment" for an infidel or Jew. Yet, liberals think if only we will just play fair, we must set the example for them, show them the light... they fucking hate us, and want to kill us all.

Do any of you honestly believe, if we were to become involved in war with ANY fucking Arab country, that OUR soldiers would be treated according to the Geneva Conventions? HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!

Dream ON! It doesn't matter if we uphold the letter of the law regarding the Geneva Conventions with thug terrorists who want to kill innocent Americans! It will mean ZILCH to any potential future enemy, whether we DO or DON'T! To idiotically argue that we must take the moral high ground in waging a war on these evil enemies, is completely bombastic.

I'm not condoning torture, no one has! We don't torture people into confessing to crimes they didn't commit, we interrogate vigorously, those who have information relevant to saving American lives, and we have managed to save thousands so far. You can make all the grandstand gestures you like, the "compromise" will render the CIA, immune from prosecution in U.S. courts.

La la la la land!

I speak more in general of the left... They don't, especially at this time, want to give him any "victory". This gives incentive to dismiss both sides of the R argument as unnecessarily violent and "torturous". So you may call "bullshit" but I predict that we will soon hear the left decrying any solely R-based compromise.
