Luhansk and Donetsk were founded by Brits

No kidding!

In 1795 Englishman Charles Gascoigne established a metal factory in what became Luhansk. This was shortly after Russia had annexed the Crimean Khanate, whose territory included the ‘Wild Lands’ of southeastern Ukraine.

In 1869 Welshman John Hughes founded a steel plant and coal mine in what became Donetsk. The city was named after him – Hughesovka or Yuzovka – until the Soviet era.
