Russia isn't at war with Crimea dumbshit.
They are at war with Ukraine.
Holy fuck, look at a map.
Why is the Kerch Bridge an important target for Ukraine?
By Sean Bell, military analyst
Since Russia invaded and then annexed Crimea in 2014, Russia needed a way to provide an arterial re-supply route to the annexed area.
At 12 miles long, the Kerch Bridge is the longest in Europe and comprises two parallel bridges - one a four-lane road bridge and the other a two-track rail link.
The bridge was built on Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, without Ukraine's permission, and thus Kyiv probably considers it a legitimate target.
Following the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia faced significant logistics challenges supporting its military forces in the southern regions of the country. Frontline forces consume vast quantities of ammunition, fuel, supplies and personnel, and all need robust logistic supply lines.
Although Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attack, there are three main reasons why Kyiv would target the bridge:
It provides a vital logistic supply route for Russian forces in southern Ukraine, so disrupting the bridge has a direct impact on Russian frontline capability.
The bridge is highly symbolic. It was built by a Putin-controlled Russian company and Mr Putin is immensely proud of the bridge - indeed he reopened the road element following a massive explosion in October 22 by driving himself in a Mercedes across the repaired road section. An attack on the bridge will have had a personal impact on Mr Putin.
Messaging. Mr Putin tightly controls the information narrative in Russia, with state control of media and the internet. However, it is very hard to hide the targeting of a vital road bridge from the Russian population. Russians based in Crimea cannot drive across the bridge and reports of the attack will have sent shock-waves through the civilian community. And, wealthy Russians who enjoy holidaying at the warm-water beaches of Crimea will have to re-think their plans. Indeed, traffic is backed up both sides of the bridge.
The video footage of the damage shows a section of the road bridge has been damaged, albeit not as extensively as the attack in October last year.
Regardless, Russia will be very keen to get the road element of the bridge open again as soon as possible.
