In June 2017, after demanding the AG's resignation for failing to "protect" him against Mueller (and then turning his resignation down), the president had another idea. He told an aide to give Sessions a message: he would be fired unless he made a speech declaring that the Mueller investigation was "very unfair" and that he, Trump, had run "the greatest campaign in American history".
The aide passed the job to an underling. As the underling later told Mueller, he felt uncomfortable with it, so he didn't do it. The president had to content himself with whining about the AG on Twitter.
More seriously, around the same time, Trump panicked and ordered White House counsel Don McGahn to have Mueller fired. McGahn thought this was a bad idea in view of what happened to Nixon, so he didn't do it. When leaks emerged later, Trump told McGahn to issue a public denial that he had tried to have Mueller fired. McGahn didn't do that either.
It's clear from the Mueller report that Trump's advisers prevaricate and evade carrying out the president's most absurd instructions, right up to the moment when they have to decide whether to lie for him or get the hell out. But as long as he's building the Wall - how's that coming, btw? - and disses the PC brigade, that's all good with his faithful followers.
