Market Returns

While I follow the stock market some I'm into real estate so that's where I put my money, not the market. But I do own Vanguard 500 Index Fund and on their site they have the returns for a hypothetical $10,000 investment in 2000 and it would be worth about $8,300 today. Well f*ck me. (I bought the stock in '96 and have been slowly adding to it.)

For you big investors have you owned any stocks for a decade that have performed like that?

No I guess I have been as lucky as good. I had the 500 most of the nineties along with chevron. as an avid wsj reader in about 2002 I read an article about returns on the market when the p/e is over 18 and it's like half what it is when the pe is below 18. so I added that to my value investing style and got out while earnings caught up and stocks got cheaper.

The bulk of the market is going to be like that, hence the Index's performance.

The exceptions would likely be found within commodity driven stocks such as oil/gold etc... as they were seriously hampered during the 1990's and then rebounded over the past decade.
