Mass deportation would be cruel

There is no way around that one.

Many conservatives will say they're breaking the law, and deserve what would be coming to them. But these are human beings - and the punishment would NOT fit the crime.

People being yanked out of their homes; many of those being forced to leave the only life they have ever known. Families being torn apart.

Despite Trump's exaggerated characterizations, most undocumented immigrants are not criminals. Most contribute to society and have regular jobs, and it's estimated they pay close to $100 billion in taxes.

This policy would be cruel, and reminiscent of harsh dictatorships throughout world history. If you call yourself a Christian, I don't see how you can support anything like this.

Regardless of the cruelty (as noted many in the Trump circle would probably consider that a BENEFIT), the fact of the matter is it would be too expensive to mass deport the number of people they would like mass deported.

And the other aspect is that many American employers have a LOT of their work done by undocumented folks. Mass deportations will, indeed, open up a lot of these jobs but the resulting thrash of unfilled jobs will be a real downer on the economy and the service industry.

Then there's the whole issue of migrant farm labor. So much of our food comes through the hands of migrants and I'm willing to be a ton of those folks are undocumented and the employers LIKE IT THAT WAY. That way the employers don't have to worry about spraying dangerous pesticides and herbicides on people because they are using migrant farm labor and right now America doesn't see those folks as "people".

Again, mass deportations will hit us in the grocery store as well.

The fact of the matter is the border is going to be a mess so long as we have massive economic disparity across that border and one side is made up of a near-failed state with a ton of desperately poor people who are willing to suffer greatly just to scrape a few pennies from us. It has been a problem for every US President for much of the 20th century. Mass deportations won't really solve much here but it WILL make a lot of things more difficult for everyone.

It's not feasibly possible to begin with but that's the thing, it would be a massive hit economically - which is why it won't happen.

should we let the shoplifter go every time simply because they are only stealing a can of soup every day? or should he eventually be jailed because he/she refused to stop stealing?

the same principle applies. they came here in violation of the law. they continually violate the law. They don't have valid SSNs, so if they are paying income taxes on stolen SSNs, that is another violation of our laws.

I get the whole humanity aspect of it, but at what point do you decide to draw the line?

This is that hard part of reality in which the obvious simple comparison fails. Yes these people crossing the border are breaking the law and we should have the right as a nation to enforce our laws as we see fit.

Unfortunately this particular crime is proving almost impossible to stop and we have to deal with the outcome using a more reality-based approach. We have to accept that the fix will never be perfect.

In this case the impact will hit US as well as them for the above stated reasons. And to some extent our own people are ensuring the "crime" continues to happen. Employers are here who will hire undocumented people and Americans will not pay a livable human wage for lawncare so other Americans won't do it.

We get a lot from these "illegals" and we give next to nothing in return. Or as little as we can possibly get away with.

The real solution probably looks more like America helping Mexico improve its economy. Not sure how much we already do but right now what is driving this border "crisis" (not really a crisis per se) is as much due to US as it is due to THEM. And right now that economic disparity will always pull the most dedicated across the border to save themselves and their families.

The most ironic thing is? Every single one of us would do the exact same thing if America were a poor country and Mexico was a utopia in comparison.

letting them in was cruel.......over 95% of those who have had hearings were denied and ordered deported......did anyone pretend there would be any other result?......

When the American Empire finishes its collapse and America descends into chaos and deep poverty a lot of the recent arrivals brought in by this illegal illegitimate regime will leave on their own.

Oh it gets even better! When America "collapses" as you folks on the Right see it doing imminently, and YOU become poor YOU will be first in line trying to cross the border into a richer country to save yourself and your family.

And you'll say you are doing a "good" thing.

I am a Progressive (non Utopian).

You know so little about American history, it's kind of shocking.

This was an issue for Ike, so it's nothing new. (I will assume you know who that was)
and I will assume you actually know there are no limits on the migrant farm workers who apply for a work visa.....I doubt you'll tell the truth about it however........

So, by your standards what other crimes would you exempt from punishment or imprisonment?

Harsh dictatorships would do it without rule of law or reason. Being in a country illegally, having a job illegally, and committing other various crimes related to your being in that country illegally, makes you the target for law enforcement to arrest you, charge you with those crimes and on conviction sentence you to be deported among other punishments you might receive.

Since the average illegal in the US has less than an 8th grade education, and probably less than a 6th grade one, has committed at least one crime (illegal entry) and probably more, doesn't speak English--and yes, that is a handicap in a country that predominantly speaks English--and has no particular job skills, they represent a net drain on the economy.

Well, he was 50% right off the bat. 100% of illegal aliens in America are criminals. That's where the "illegal" part comes in...
