Matt Gaetz says he will vote with Democrats on House’s war powers resolution

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a close ally of President Donald Trump’s, will vote against his friend having power to go to war without Congress.

“Killing Soleimani was the right decision,” he said, according to a Bloomberg reporter.

However, he doesn’t agree with getting into a prolonged war in the Middle East. It’s a sentiment that Trump once shared when running for president in 2016. Gaetz said is the “wrong decision.”

Gaetz joins many other Republicans who have spoken out against Trump’s unchecked power to attack Iran at will. Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Mike Lee (R-UT) have been two of the loudest Republicans supporting the Democrats’ bill.
 
The real question is do you oppose the War Powers act of 1973 or are you just anti Trump?

I oppose the War Powers Act as a matter of policy. Congress should declare war.

But Congress abdicated that power years ago. Now they need a filibuster proof Congress to get it back.

If Nazi Pelousy were doing this as a matter of philosophical principle and not just a cheap political stunt I would support the cunt.

As already noted, this resolution has all the same force of law as a NewYears resolution.

I've heard Matt Gaetz publicly decry other actions taken by Donald Trump before- several times now.

And I've also heard his daddy criticize the Bushies before too, and for some of the same reasons of the Bushies trying to circumvent Congress!

Matt knows that his voting record is important to him becoming Speaker of the House some day, so he wants to get his votes right and start showing leadership.

He has already taken a beating from his constituents for acting like a goofy Trump cheerleader in the House Impeachment hearings.

Florida is a swing state now!

I kind of agree. If I were a Senator, I would still probably vote alongside Paul on this though. Even if the Democrats are doing this for the wrong reasons, it would be good to return to putting the emphasis on Congress for entering war.
 
The resolution is non-binding but is meant to reassert congressional authority and rebuke Trump’s decision to take out Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike last Friday while he traveled to an airport in Baghdad, Iraq. Trump did not consult with congressional leaders ahead of the attack that killed the Iranian military leader and afterward sent Congress a notification explaining the rationale but kept it classified.

The resolution “requires the president to consult with Congress 'in every possible instance' before introducing United States Armed Forces into hostilities."
