..."We could set up a system where food is cheaper if we just eleminated meat inspectors!"

I love that responce to the point that smaller government is always better!

yeah, i also notice that the government never PREVENTS ecoli and other junk, but definitely have no problem assessing fines and penalties to add to their coffers.

Just one of many Damo...

But the look on that Senators face made this one worth a mention!

I love how you guys jump on this as some sort of victory, or that the comparison is even valid in the first place. Here's a hint; they're not even close to the same.

On the one hand you have a government agency/program that regulates whether a product is safe for human consumption. On the other hand you have a government agency/program that determines your medical needs. Now let's engage in a bit of hypothetical on both sides. I have a new product that I would like to market. Currently, the government can determine whether it is safe to sell or not, but nothing more. Under your idea, the government would have the theoretical ability to determine whether such a product was 'needed' or not.

It's not an apples to apples comparison. It's not even an apples to oranges comparison. It's an apples to anal lube comparison.

But what healthcare needs could you possibly have than to go to your doctor when you're sick and recieve treatment?

That was the greatest political bitch slap since "Well there you go again!"

Early prevention methods, second opinions, alternative solutions, Etc.

Now before we go any further I'm not saying we don't need reform of some sort. I'm simply refuting the argument that because the government has safety regulations, it also has the power to determine our needs. It doesn't.

You know not what you sayeth! They do it every day. Ever hear of the department of health? Ya know? The people who inspect food in grocery stores and the cleanliness of kitchens. Ask 3D's dad at the water department if they've ever prevented e.coli breakouts?

Who cares? It was an awesome bitch slap and funny as hell....that is all.

If what he said was a proper comparison maybe. But it isn't.
You're insane. It was a completely appropriate comparison. Obama could have made the same statement that we can make health care cheaper by getting rid of the FDA. It's true and health care would be cheaper....and a hell of a lot less safe.

As for your asertion that government would determine whether a product or service was needed or not, well they all ready do that to some extent. That's really a big part of the problem of controlling cost. Much of what drives up health care costs is on services, drugs, procedures, etc who's value and efficacy has never been demonstrated. Is an MRI always required when someone falls down? Is costly orthopedic ankle surgery more affective for hyperpronation then an inexpensive pair of orthotic shoe inserts? Is bypass surgery ($100,000 to $250,000) more affective then angioplasty ($5,000)? We don't know the answers to those questions cause there's no systematic effort to collect the data and make objective decisions. Why should public or private health financing pay for methods and modalities that do not work or for which there are far more cost affective alternatives?

Why should we be paying $50,000 for a back operations when seeing a Chiropractor for 2 times a week for 6 months at $50/visit ($1,300) would fix the problem? This is a big part of what the health care reform regulations will require and regulate that the private sector has been utterly unable to do in this country and yea, the government is a hell of a lot better at managing these kinds of big problems then the private sector obviously is or else we wouldn't be paying 16% of our GDP on health care. Hell you can't even get the Private sector financing (insurance companies) to even agree on using a standardized electronic patient form! How the hell then can you expect them to collect and evaluate data as complex as this?

So yea it was an apples to apples comparison and Cantor did make a stupid comment and the smack down burn Obama laid on his ass was hillareous!
